Mr Toh Soon Huat JP
Volunteer Executive Chairman of Sian Chay Medical Institution
“The Path of Virtue Keeps Love Flowing”
Toh Soon Huat is an internationally renowned Singaporean philanthropist and a full-time voluntary executive chairman of Sian Chay Medical Institution, a Social Service Agency with 120 years of history. He upholds the core values of “Forgiveness, universal love, compassion, gratitude and blessing” servicing the community by providing free Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation, low cost medicine and treatment. He was awarded Singapore’s “President’s Volunteerism and Philanthropy Award (PVPA)”, in recognition of his achievements and contributions to Singapore’s philanthropy. He was named as honoree of Forbes Asia’s 2019 Heroes of Philanthropy, in the same list as Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group.
Toh Soon Huat embarked on the path of philanthropy from an entrepreneur, is related to two people: one is his mother, who influences him since childhood with the spirit of helping others is the foundation of happiness, even when he is in difficulty, and the other is Tan Kah Kee, who dedicated all his life to running the school.
Be grateful and give back whenever you have the opportunity.
When Mr Toh was 13 and studying in secondary school, he started to help his second uncle by picking up chicken eggs in his farm during the school holidays. He hurried ducks into cages past midnight and sold chicken eggs in the market. His uncle gave him a hongbao for all his work, not a salary. He used the money he made from the farm to buy a bicycle for $80 so that he could cycle to see his grandmother. She was very happy whenever she saw him. He could talk to her for hours on one visit.
This poor experience left an indelible memory in Toh Soon Huat’s childhood. He said: “If a person has not been poor, he does not understand what it is like to be poor, but the whole process of being poor allows me to learn and comprehend. I have learned what is gratitude, contribution and commitment. In fact, being poor is not a very hard thing, it is just an experience, a life process, and a life endurance because the opportunity to come into this world is to be grateful and contribute, But many people will complain. Being positive, the hardship we faced for being poor is just a severe process to improve oneself, change oneself, and prepare ourselves to face the future and life.
After selling the listed company he built, Toh Soon Huat wanted to study, improve himself, and plan for a new path for his life. But then calm down and think about it. Three falls are not a permanent failure. It is an experience and process to enhance the concept of life. Everyone bears various responsibilities at different ages. Responsibility is an innate mission of a person, which accompanies every life. We have to be responsible for our lives, no matter good or bad, bear all the results and occurrences.
After the 2008 earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan, China, several friends and he launched the “Let Love Flow” disaster relief TV fundraising activity in Singapore and raised $10 million to support those affected by the disaster. This donation helped the disaster-stricken area build seven Sino-Singapore Primary Schools and a bridge as a token of friendship. Every year, tens of thousands of new students are given the opportunity to receive education and acquire knowledge at these schools. They also understand about charity and dedication, gratitude and giving back. This also strengthened the long-term friendship between China and Singapore.
In 2008, the century-old Sian Chay Medical Institution was on the verge of closing due to a lack of voluntary professional management. Mr Teo Kim Chuan, the director of Sian Chay Medical Institution at the time, convinced Toh Soon Huat to take over, and Toh promised not to receive any salary to turn the tide. At the beginning of serving as the chairman, it was in a bottleneck period, with difficulties to raise donations and its operation was almost unsustainable. Over the years, With his personal charisma and Toh raised a large amount of donations to bring Sian Chay out of the predicament and make Sian Chay develop like a rising sun.
To develop Sian Chay and prepare a better future for Singapore’s philanthropy, Toh Soon Huat also integrated Sian Chay’s century-old charity spirit with his own life experience and created Sian Chay’s cultural values of forgiveness, universal love, compassion, gratitude, and blessing. Sian Chay also works with the nation to build a harmonious society by actively promoting the beliefs of “Nation Progresses, Family Prospers; Family Harmony, Successful Endeavours. Forward with the Nation, Bonding with the People.”. Upholding the great Chinese tradition of mutual assistance, Sian Chay provides free TCM consultation and low-cost treatments for the public, strongly supports welfare undertakings, actively participates in charitable activities in various communities, civic groups, and community centres to give back to the society, regardless of race and religion.
In fact, “forgiveness, compassion, and universal love” is a form of self-cultivation, a view of life and philosophy of life, gratitude and brightness towards life, It can solve many problems, related to physical and mental health, social harmony, and conflict and ignorance between people.
Sian Chay Medical Institution, a social enterprise, under societal management for social service.
Toh Soon Huat will continue to work with like-minded people, uphold the mission set by the predecessors with love and empathy, and systematically fulfil the goal to serve the people, serve the society, benefit more people, and dedicate fully
to charity as his responsibility for a bright, meaningful, and noble purpose.
At the same time, it is hoped that charitable organizations can interact with each other, support each other, do good together and share resources. Through universal love and gratitude, let’s work for charity and community welfare so that Singapore’s charity and welfare sector can thrive, and continue to benefit the vulnerable people in society, and the welfare of people can sustain throughout generations!
If you’re an ocean, a ship wouldn’t be a bother. If you’re a small lake, even a boat is too big. Hope there will be many big oceans to help the needy and vulnerable in Singapore and for our nation to grow and prosper. Walk out of your worldview and use your wisdom to look at the world from another angle and you may see another you, and a different you perhaps.
Continuing with compassion with Sian Chay, I hope that more people can enjoy the warmth of being cared for and be nourished in the spirit.
Dr Teo Hark Piang PBM
Executive Director and CEO, Union Gas Holdings Limited
Honourable Chairman, Sian Chay Medical Institution
Dr Teo Hark Piang, has been doing good for many years and said frankly that “you can’t lose money by doing charity.” Because the soul obtains great abundance, from which full positive energy is derived, and the soul will not walk on the wrong path in doing things.
In February last year, when the pandemic just started to break out globally and local circuit breaker measures have not yet been implemented, items such as masks and hand sanitisers ran out of stock or their prices have shot up as the pandemic spread. At that time, Executive Director of Union Energy Group Teo Hark Piang, bought 200,000 bottles of hand sanitisers and distributed them to hawkers and household customers at a price nearly five times higher than the market price, spending a total of $1 million.
Teo Hark Piang, who has been doing good in various ways for many years, said in an interview that the more important thing was to ensure everyone’s safety and try to help as many people as possible. Especially as hawkers who by providing labour for return, has to spend many hours working in a sultry environment every day. Disadvantaged families too are impacted badly. Seeing this motivated him to lend a helping hand.
“I am more fortunate than many people. God has given me a healthy body and the ability to make money. I also hope to give back to society.”
Talking about the motivation to do good, Teo Hark Piang said: “You can’t lose money by doing charity, the more you give, the more you receive.”
Teo Hark Piang explained that what you receive does not refer to money, but the rewards to the soul. “When you help others, the happiness received will have positive energy. This positive energy will also make you upright in doing things in normal times, and not walking a downward path. I also think this virtue can accumulate.”
In addition, doing charity will also help you know more kind people, and he deeply believes that this is born from the heart.
“If you take things too hard, or are not willing to help others, your life will be affected.”
Speaking of the biggest impact on him last year, Teo Hark Piang believes that it really made him feel that life does not need to be so busy, that work can slow down and he should spend more time with his family.
“The pandemic has promoted the bond between me and my family. I can leave work early to spend more time with them.”
As for the company, working arrangements had to be adjusted to comply with the pandemic prevention measures. From the management point of view, this may not be a good thing, as everyone seems disunited, but in the long run, we find that this new form of working allows everyone to operate more independently.
Talking about his feelings and changes this year, Teo Hark Piang said he knows how to take things easy.
“I used to be irritated with some small problems, but now I see they are not there anymore. You must learn to take things easy and actively desire to accomplish what you set out to do.”
Mr. Yap Seng Teck PBM
Founder, Yappy Pets Pte Ltd.
Taken from society and giving it back more. Giving back to society is the responsibility of entrepreneurs. Although it is said that human being has working power, but energy at the spiritual level can be shared and transmitted. We are willing to “set sail again” to inspire people, give everyone the strength to break through the difficulties and accompany everyone to see the dawn again and face the challenges bravely.
“The right attitude can keep a person young and active forever”. The most important thing in life is to adjust your mindset, let go and give more. Life is short, do good as much as you can.”
A good attitude and a benevolent heart not only make Mr. Yap’s life happier and more satisfying but also develop his business further. His dog food production enterprise has a history of 20 years. He pays special attention to employees’ training to improve their morality.
Mr. Yap led by example, and under his influence and leadership, his employees were also full of enthusiasm for charity. Each company participate in or hold any charitable activities, most of the employees are involved, he was happy and pleased with his staff. We often hold activities to teach people how to take care of pets correctly. Through these activities, pet owners can get the right way to take care of their pets and the pets will be able to have a healthier and happier life.”
On the wall of Mr. Yap’s office hangs a piece of calligraphy, on which is written only the Chinese character “Dao” with round and neat lines. Mr. Ye explains in a firm and serious tone, “Tao is morality and benevolence. If you want to acquire anything, you should do it in the right way. The word “Dao” expresses thousands of philosophies, which Mr. Yap keeps in mind and broadens his path of life.
Mr Winston Chu Chee Keong PBM
Founder, Executive Chairman, CEO, Fu Chan F&B Group Pte Ltd
Honourable Chairman, Sian Chay Medical Institution
Low-key life, high-profile work
“To us, the greatest significance of doing charity is that it not only help others but also give
ourselves a sense of satisfaction in our hearts, and a better way to improve ourselves and uplift our minds.”
This is the experience of Winston Chu, the founder of Fu Chan F&B Group, and his wife Pamela Leow after doing charity for many years. In all the 17 years since founding the business, they have never stopped doing good and giving back to society. Whether it’s donating to communities, charities, university education funds, or needy families of other races, the husband-and-wife team work together to contribute to charity.
In an interview, Mr Chu said “my teacher taught me to be a low-key person and do things high-key. This is also my life motto. After setting a goal, it must be executed resolutely, fast and efficient. I am relatively frugal in my life. I do not spend much money on myself, but I am willing to contribute money to help charity.”
In the current epidemic, when people are having a harder life, we should step up bravely to solve their urgent needs. I also hope that our donation will be able to attract more people and influence more people to charity by contributing money and effort wherever possible to help the needy in society.

Managing Director, Ocean Butterflies Music Pte Ltd
Music is a universal language. Let the music inspire social change.
Music can do way more than bring precious memories. Ocean Butterflies Music aspires to use music to influence social and emotional effects and spread positivity. Since 2016, OB Music has actively collaborated with representative charity organizations to put up music-related charity activities.
In April 2016, OB Music co-organized a ‘Xinyao-themed’ charity event to raise funds for the “VIVA Foundation for Children with Cancer”. The event aimed to allow the public to understand the importance of leading-edge research, medical care, and education for children with cancer. Dawn Gan, the ambassador of this event, set an example by donating her long hair to make wigs for cancer patients in need. This event was the first-ever Xinyao-themed charity campaign.
In 2018, OB Music joined hands with Goh Lee Hiang Memorial Fund to co-present Xinyao Pioneer Dr. Liang Wen Fu’s concert titled “Liang Wenfu Charity Concert 2018”. The ticket sale proceeds and funds raised were donated to charities and non-profit organizations.
The pandemic not only posed a huge threat to the healthcare system, it severely disrupted global economies and essentially changed one’s way of life. With no end in sight to the onslaught, many lost their ray of hope, and slowly, pessimism crept into their hearts.
Being surrounded by this negativity, and hoping to boost the morale of the public, OB Music hopes to release a heartfelt anthem to encourage everyone pushing through adversities and our unyielding frontline warriors. Aptly titled ‘Take Flight’, the inspirational song written by Mr. 21, co-composed by Sun Xueling and Jake Goh, which is also performed by Jake Goh, sings the internal monologue of an individual motivating himself and his peers amidst adversities.
Despite moments of despair and uncertainty, these trials and tribulations also make people stronger and equip them with the courage to push through hardship. Never bow down, and never give up. Keep fighting, Everyone! Keep fighting, Singapore!
